These guidelines are designed for leaders and managers in active CBT communities, local tourism management agencies and other stakeholders in the field of CBT who are interested in developing, organizing and managing a CBT model embracing community engagement.
The guidelines include general knowledge of CBT, the determining factors of a CBT destination’s success, how to build and organize a tourism management structure in the community, and steps to develop products, pricing and sales. With the main objective being capacity building in organizing and managing tourism activities for the community, these guidelines aren’t focused on detailed standards related to products and services (such as accommodation, meals, etc…)
This CBT Practical Handbook was compiled within the framework of the project: “Supporting Tourism Activities to Benefit Ethnic Minority Communities” in Vietnam and Thailand. The project is funded by the Toyota Foundation and implemented by the Centre for Social Initiatives Promotion CSIP (Vietnam), Sapa O’Chau Social Enterprise (Vietnam), Change Fusion Organization (Thailand) and Local Alike (a social enterprise in Thailand).
Through visitations, information exchange, documentation of knowledge and experience in CBT in both countries, the project aims to raise awareness and build common standards on CBT in Vietnam and Thailand, thereby supporting communities doing CBT in both countries in standardizing their products and services, and in strengthening connections with the tourism market. The knowledge and experience from the project is also expected to be a useful reference for policymakers and tourism managers in Vietnam and Thailand in supporting the development of the CBT model.
