Raising service and sustainability standard is an important strategy to ensure long term sustainability, increase the competitiveness of CBT and raise the credibility of CBT among tour operators. A standard should also help to increase the confidence of independent travelers, as they search for information about tourism destination and activities.

Overall, a standard should be useful for anyone who wants to know whether a CBT project is having minimum negative impacts on local society and the environment, while making a concrete positive contribution to the community.

This standard handbook has been developed with experiences drawn from its precedential projects and are being continuously improved for wide use in Thai Lan and other countries.

The CBT Standard Handbook is one output of a current research project to develop best practice CBT standards for ASEAN. The project is funded by The National Research Council of Thailand, and the Thailand Research Fund.
