Learning from Sung CBT: A Study Visit to Inspire community-based tourism in Phu Mau village, Van Ho district

Last week, Action on CBT had the pleasure of hosting a two-day learning trip for 30 members of the Phu Mau community-based tourism group to Sưng village, Da Bac district. The visit aimed to share practical knowledge and inspire new approaches in developing sustainable, community-led tourism. The trip focused on two key areas:

1. Improving homestays and introducing Private Guest Rooms

Participants had the opportunity to stay in three traditional Dao Tiền communal homestays and visit three pioneering households that recently renovated their homes to offer private guest rooms. Key takeaways included:

  • Architectural harmony with nature and the surrounding landscape

  • Preservation of traditional elements, especially those with cultural or spiritual meaning

  • Designs that balance comfort and cost, ensuring functionality for both guests and family members

A vibrant discussion followed, with participants exchanging views on blending modern comforts with cultural heritage. Many expressed a clearer vision for how to adapt these ideas at home.

2. Understanding the Role of a Community Tourism Coordination Board

On the first afternoon, the group joined three hands-on activities organized by local service teams: a brocade weaving workshop, traditional Dó paper-making, and a herbal medicine and Dao blessing session.

These experiences set the context for a rich exchange with Xóm Sưng’s Community Tourism Coordination Board, where members shared valuable insights into:

  • Coordinating between service groups and households

  • Building partnerships with local authorities

  • Operating with transparency and trust

Key lessons included:

  • Start simple, build strong foundations before expanding

  • Stay open to learning, but always adapt to local realities

  • Document processes, work with respect, and maintain trust

  • Inspire and empower communities, rather than impose instructions
